Topics for classroom discussion and assignments:

  • The author discusses stealing, which is a major theme in her Newbery Award-winning book, A Single Shard. Write an essay answering the following question: Is it stealing if it is something that cannot be held in your hands, for example music over the Internet?

  • Research and define copyright laws — their origin and meaning today.

  • The author talks about researching the Erie Canal, and explains how the locks work. Research an invention that interests you and make a presentation to the class.

  • Linda Sue Park discusses 3-line Korean poetry called sijo. The first line introduces the topic. The second line develops the topic. The third line twists the topic.  Try to create your own 3-line poetry.

  • Linda Sue Park says, ”We are afraid of what we don’t know.” Do you agree?  Take a position on this topic and write an essay.

  • Linda talks about how to develop a story. She says you must have a character with quests — both internal and external. The story revolves around the character’s solutions to these quests.  Invent a character who has both internal and external quests. As a follow-up assignment, develop a story around his or her character.
